Guerini Maxum Sporter
Side-plated Guerini guns have featured quite frequently in this magazine. In both 12 and 20 bore form, they are especially attractive and shoot well too. You have the option of the Maxum (shown here) with bold scroll, or, the Essex model which is available with tight, ‘Purdey’ rose and scroll with colour case hardening or a brushed finish. It’s a tough call, because they all look good. My favourite is the Maxum because it is not trying to emulate anything but itself. The bold but tasteful styling suits the gun. In 12 bore, it is available in 30, 32, 34” form at a very sensible RRP of £2965. The 20 bore is available in 30 or 32” for the same money. There is an adjustable stock version of the 12 at £3,225 as well. The larger bore gun comes with no less than 8 extended chokes and you have the option of 5 flush fitting types for £135 extra. These handsome Guerinis are back-bored at 18.6mm, have 2 ¾” chambers and are steel shot friendly with Fleurs de Lys Proof. As for the rest of the spec, there are vented side ribs and 10mm sighting rib with shallow centre channel and mid bead. The stock is comfortable with a full pistol grip and palm swell. The 34” gun weighs 8.14lbs – which is relatively light for a really big beast. The forend is of Schnabel pattern. If you don’t want to spend quite as much, the Summit Limited sporter may be considered. This has a colour hardened ‘boxlock’ action without the side-plates. Shortly, a new Summit Sporter will be available with a coin finished action at the same RRP of £1,992. The summit guns are back-bored and have similar stock shapes to their side-plated brethren.
